Art Journal Quilts - Piped Mondrian
Led by Helene Knott
Piet Mondrian was a 20th Century Dutch painter who delved into a variety of Modern styles ranging from Impressionism to Cubism. Perhaps his most iconic artworks are a wide series of paintings featuring squares and rectangles in bright primary colors framed with narrow black bands - simple, bold and graphic. In this Journal Quilt assignment you will create a similar layout of squares and rectangles creating the framing bands with flat piping. You can draft your own vibrant layout inspired by Mondrian's work or just follow a gridded layout provided by the instructor; leave the blocks plain and unadorned or add stitchery or a motif as a focal point if you wish.
Art Journal Quilts are small (page sized) quilts that are usually made quickly to experiment with new techniques. Because they are so small, they don't involve the investment in time that a larger project would require allowing you to work out the kinks and decide if you like the results enough to apply it to future projects. These classes are ongoing, meeting every month and featuring a different project each session. You're welcome to sign up for as many as you like! Skill level: confident beginner and up.
