Art Journal Quilts - Tortoiseshell Appliqué
Led by Helene Knott
This is an exercise in creating raised texture for a bas relief effect. The project is inspired by a tortoise shell which is formed by layers of keratin (the same material that makes our fingernails). A new layer of keratin forms at the base of the old 'plate' increasing in size each year resulting in a steppe texture over time. In this class we will explore recreating similar stacked tiles or plates in layers of leather or felt.
Art Journal Quilts are small (page sized) quilts that are usually made quickly to experiment with new techniques. Because they are so small, they don't involve the investment in time that a larger project would require allowing you to work out the kinks and decide if you like the results enough to apply it to future projects. These classes are ongoing, meeting every month and featuring a different project each session. You're welcome to sign up for as many as you like! Skill level: confident beginner and up.
