Adventures in Ice Dyeing

Led by Helene Knott

Dyeing fabric is usually a messy, expensive process requiring precise formulas to prepare, use, and store dyes. This compact method uses powdered fiber reactive dye, and is a cool (no pun intended) way to dye fabric and other fibers. The results are unpredictable but yield some fascinating forms, colors, and textures on fabric depending on how you crumple and scrunch it. The method shown in class makes the process neater, cleaner, and portable, compared to setting up a dedicated dye studio space, making it easy to dye small batches of fabrics. Other things can also be dyed – you can over-dye ugly or faded (light-colored) commercial fabrics, embroidery floss, lace, clothing, and cheesecloth or canvas. Hand-dyed canvas is particularly nice as a foundation for fiber art embroidery or embellishment. Ice Dyeing is a great way to disguise stained cotton clothing or table linens. Note: The class fee includes use of instructor’s dyes, chemicals, and ice.
