Ruler Work for Beginners
Let's turn those quilt tops into quilts! You've done all the work of selecting fabrics, cutting and piecing. Why turn it over to someone else to quilt? Worse yet, why let that top languish in a dark tub never to see the light of day? In this class you will learn the basics of free motion quilting using Westalee templates to guide your stitching.
Westalee rulers allow you to achieve accurate designs, help settle down your stitch length and give you endless possibilities for finishing your quilts. You will learn the basics of machine setup, thread and needle selection, and tips for making it easier on your body. Then you will sample just a few of the hundreds of rulers available.
Lunch, drinks, & snacks will be provided.
Supply List
Required:
- Sewing machine in good working order that is capable of free motion quilting
- Machine extension table (Sew Steady or Machine brand specific)
- 40 - 50 weight cotton thread, contrasting colors for bobbin and needle
- New 90-14 topstitch needles
- Scissors
- Fabric marking tool
- Ruler work presser foot for your machine, either Sew Steady or a brand specific foot (Bernina, Janome)*
- 12" Westalee arc template for your machine*
- Spacing gauge
Optional:
- Top loading self-threading needles
- Ruler work glider*
- Free motion quilting gloves
- Crosshair square*
We will supply quilt sandwiches for you to practice on.
* Starred items are available from Montavilla in advance and we will assist you in selecting the items for proper fit.

Cancellation & Refund Policy
Class, club, and event fees are nonrefundable. You must cancel 72 hours before the first session of the class, club, or event to receive store credit or apply the fee to another class, club or event. However, if the instructor or Montavilla Sewing Centers has to cancel a class, club, or event, you have the option for a store credit or full refund. Students must bring their own machines to all classes, unless otherwise noted. We request that you do not bring children or guests to the classes. Thank you!
