Broken Herringbone Quilt

Led by Victor LeMay

This quilt is beautiful in many color schemes. I’ve done it in peaceful sea glass tones but brights are beautiful as well. This quilt is scrap pile friendly if you prefer to go that route. While the piecing looks intricate, that is an illusion. The blocks are built from strip sets and straight-line piecing – no Y seams. Pattern & instructions will be provided in class. Piecing is very forgiving as we’ll create the blocks slightly large and trim to final size. This is a Beginner friendly class. Must know how to operate a sewing machine, use rotary cutter and ruler.

Supply List

  • 24 inch rectangle ruler. If you have a 12 x 6 rectangle ruler bring that too.
  • Rotary cutter with new blade.
  • Rotary cutting mat
  • Sewing machine, thread, and notions appropriate for piecing
  • Scissors and seam ripper
  • 12.5 inch or larger square ruler
  • The blocks will be roughly assembled at 13 inches square, then trimmed to final
  • 12.5 inch size prior to assembly.

Fabric requirements:

  • For Blocks:
  • Assorted fat quarters, scraps or yardage sufficient to cut 36 assorted 2½” x width of fabric (WOF) strips cut in half OR 72 assorted 2½” x half width of fabric strips.
  • This is equivalent to 12 fat quarters or 12 ¼ yard WOF cuts*
  • For sashing and outer border
  • 1⅔ yard white (1 yard for sashing ⅔ yard for outer border)
  • For accent border:
  • ¼ yard coordinating fabric

*More fabrics means more variety in your blocks. The half width strips mean you can use multiple fat quarters and/or leftovers to make this quilt. I used about 15 different fabrics to create the sample. If you use WOF cuts, I suggest cutting them in half to maximize the variety in blocks.
