Paper-Cut Applique Quilt

Led by Helene Knott

I have been intrigued by Chinese and Hungarian (Scherenschnitte) paper-cut designs since my teen years. As an instructor, I am always on the lookout for intriguing new approaches to fiber art and quilting, and I have found that many paper craft techniques can be adapted to work in fabric. These intricate paper cuts had me stymied for a long time. The designs are detailed and not that hard to cut as fusible applique with a sharp craft knife and fine-pointed scissors, but the minute I removed the release paper backing, the applique collapsed into an unwieldy pile of twisted fabric lace that was impossible to straighten and fuse to a background. In this class, you will learn the nifty method I discovered to make this otherwise impossible task a breeze. I will have a couple of paper-cut templates available for students to use for the project, or you can find your own design from a variety of sources (books or the internet). For a first-time project, keep it simple. Choose a design with some detail, but not so intricate that you won't finish cutting it in class.
