Dye Fabric Two Ways
Join us for a fun and inspiring seminar with Local Quilt Artist Ann Johnston. Ann's Art quilts—made with her hand-dyed fabrics and freehand stitching—are shown in exhibitions worldwide. Her books, workshops, and lectures about dyeing and designing have been resources for fiber artists for many years. Her growing mastery of color and texture continues to produce powerful work that draws in viewers and collectors from all walks of life.
In the morning, Ann will demonstrate both low-water immersion dyeing and painting and printing with Procion MX dyes, introducing the unlimited potential of creating color and patterns on fabric. The dyes are light and wash fast--without changing the hand of the fabric, perfect for quilts and wearables. She will show how various tools and changing the consistency of the dyes creates different effects.
In the afternoon, Ann will show quilts she has made with various dye techniques and discuss her construction and design decisions. The goal of the seminar is to offer students a chance to see possibilities for their own work and enable them to be able to make their own colors and marks on their textile projects. She will bring lots of fabric samples to illustrate the ideas. Handouts will provide the basic information required in case participants want to try it on their own.
For further reference see Ann's books and her online videos: Beyond the Book: Paint & Print with Dye and Color by Accident: Exploring Low-Water Immersion Dyeing. Check her website for more quilts, news and free resources.
Snacks, treats and drinks will be provided, but please bring a sack lunch.
